Why Artificial Tears Aren’t Enough
Dry eye is not always about having too few tears. In many cases, it is a problem with how your tears function.
Your tear film has several layers that keep your eyes smooth and protected. When one of those layers becomes unstable, tears may evaporate too quickly or fail to coat the eye properly.
Common Dry Eye Symptoms
You might notice:
- Burning or stinging
- A gritty or “sand in your eyes” feeling
- Redness or irritation
- Blurry or fluctuating vision
- Watery eyes that still feel irritated
When the surface of your eye becomes irritated, your body may produce a rush of reflex tears. These tears do not stay on the eye long enough to provide lasting comfort, which is why your eyes can feel dry and watery at the same time.
Our Approach to Dry Eye Care
If you have been relying on artificial tears alone, you may have noticed that relief does not last long.
AtVision Pro, we focus on identifying what’s causing your symptoms instead of treating dry eye as a single problem.
During your visit, we evaluate:
- The quality, stability, and breakup of your tear film
- The function of your meibomian glands
- Signs of inflammation on the surface of your eyes
- Lifestyle and environmental factors that may be contributing
This testing helps us determine whether your symptoms are related to tear evaporation, gland blockage, inflammation, or tear drainage, so your treatment is based on what your eyes actually need.
Dry Eye Treatments Chosen for Your Tear System
Dry eye treatment works best when it’s based on what your eyes are actually missing. At Vision Pro, we use your eye exam findings to recommend options that support tear quality, eyelid health, or tear retention.
Your plan may include home care, prescription treatment, or an in-office procedure. Some patients benefit from more than one approach.
iLux® for Blocked Meibomian Glands
Small glands along your eyelids release oils that slow tear evaporation. When these glands become blocked, tears can dry too quickly and leave your eyes burning, gritty, or tired.
iLux® uses controlled heat and gentle pressure to soften and clear blocked oils, so your tears last longer on the eye, and irritation is reduced.
In-Office Eyelid Treatments
Buildup and inflammation along the eyelid margins can affect tear quality and irritate the eye’s surface. Lid treatments, such as BlephEx, are designed to clean the eyelid area and support healthier gland function.
Our eye doctor may also recommend warm compresses, eyelid cleansing, or other home care to help maintain results between visits.
Lacrifill® for Longer-Lasting Tear Retention
Some patients make enough tears, but those tears do not stay on the eye long enough to do their job. Lacrifill is placed in the tear drainage system to help natural tears remain on the eye’s surface longer.
This may be a good option for patients with dry, irritated, or watery eyes when tears drain too quickly. In many cases, Lacrifill may be covered by medical insurance when it is considered medically necessary. Our team can help you review your benefits before moving forward. Coverage cannot be guaranteed.
Prescription Eye Drops and At-Home Care
Depending on your needs, your plan may also include:
- Lubricating eye drops
- Prescription dry eye medication
- Warm compresses
- Eyelid hygiene
- Screen and blinking adjustments
- Changes to contact lens wear
- Follow-up visits to monitor your response
Dry eye is often an ongoing condition. Treatment may need to be adjusted as your symptoms, environment, or eye health change.
Dry Eye FAQ
Why are my eyes watery if they are dry?
When the eye’s surface becomes dry or irritated, it may trigger a rush of watery reflex tears. These tears often drain quickly and do not contain the balanced oil and moisture needed for lasting comfort.
Can dry eye be cured?
Dry eye is often a long-term condition. Many patients can improve their comfort with the right combination of treatment, home care, and follow-up visits, but results vary.
Does insurance cover dry eye treatment?
Dry eye evaluations and some treatments may be billed to medical insurance when medically necessary. Coverage depends on your plan.
